Quality of Activities of Daily Living in Children with Autism
Undergraduate Research Project - UnpublishedAn undergraduate academic project exploring everyday function and independence in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Topic
Quality of Activities of Daily Living in children with Autism.
Study population
40 diagnosed cases of Autism.
Objective
How deficits in daily living skills affect the functional independence of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
General findings
The study examined Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and functional independence in 40 children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), aged 4–12 years. Findings revealed a significant gap between chronological age and functional performance across cognitive, socialization, self-help, and motor domains. The cognitive domain showed the largest difference between chronological and functional age. Statistical analysis also identified significant differences in functional performance across the recorded ASD severity groups. These findings highlight the challenges autistic children may experience in developing age-appropriate daily living skills. The study emphasizes the importance of individualized, family-centered occupational therapy to support self-care skills, participation, and functional independence.
Academic significance
This study contributes to the academic understanding of Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It highlights the differences between chronological age and functional developmental performance across cognitive, socialization, self-help, and motor domains. The findings may help students, researchers, and healthcare professionals better understand the daily living challenges experienced by children with ASD. The study also provides a basis for further research into the relationship between ASD severity and functional independence. Furthermore, it may support the development of individualized, evidence-informed occupational therapy approaches aimed at improving self-care skills and participation in everyday activities.
